Day 4: Sham (Contd)

……It had been a sunny day when she first met him. Shopping was her favorite past time one which she had decided to indulge in heavily today. The sun and traffic made the shopping experience unbearable so she decided to take a break at the Ikeja Mall at Alausa. She strolled over to KFC and ordered a cup of ice cream. Halfway through, this young man rushes over and sits down.

“I’m so sorry I’m late babe. There was serious traffic………” He looks up and stops.

“You’re not Sola” he says.

“Newsflash” she replies, her reply dripping with sarcasm. He smiles and apologizes “I’m so sorry. I’m supposed to meet up with someone and she’s not here yet”.

“Its okay,” she says and goes right back to her cup of iced cream. There’s no where else to sit so he stays there and makes a call to his colleague who he’s supposed to meet with. She cannot make the appointment anymore, she’s also stuck in traffic. He sighs audibly and slumps down into the chair.

“Gosh, I can’t believe I hurried all the way here just to have meeting canceled”.

She looks up from her almost empty cup and offers a half smile. She didn’t feel like talking. He watches her for a moment and then stretches his hand.

“Hi, I’m kunle.”

“Ronke”, she replies curtly. She doesn’t want to talk but he’s not taking the hint.

“So are you waiting for someone?” He asks.

“Not really”, she replied gathering her things. “Just taking a break from the sun. I should get back too”

“Get back to the sun?! That weird cause its raining”. She glances through the glass panel sharply, wondering when the rain started. Alas it wasn’t raining; the sun was still shining in its glorious ferocity . She glanced back at him to see him smiling.

“What was that about?” She asks.

“Er, was just trying to steal a few minutes of your time” he replied, smiling guiltily.

“If you can walk then” she said as she picked her bags and left. Minutes later, at the lingerie shop, she is joined by Kunle who determinedly stayed by her side till she finished with her shopping. By that time, they were talking animatedly, exchanging numbers and promising to call each other. That was the beginning of a long friendship that later blossomed into 60 long years of marital bliss………
